This little book carries a huge impact! Well, it's not just a book, actually. This #1 Wall Street Journal Bestseller includes access to a new and upgraded version of Gallup's online test for discovering your strengths. In the introduction to this book, author Tom Rath explains that the team of Gallup scientists who developed the original test were "tired of living in a world that revolved around fixing our weaknesses. Society's relentless focus on people's shortcomings had turned into a global obsession. What's more, we had discovered that people have several times more potential for growth when they invest energy in developing their strengths instead of correcting their deficiencies." Gallup's studies "indicate that people who do have the opportunity to focus on their strengths every day are six times as likely to be engaged in their jobs and more than three times as likely to report having an excellent quality of life in general." I was asked to take this test during a chat with a previous client about collaborating on a new project. His coach wanted to know my strengths so she could best coach him in working with me. So what turned out as a favor to him was really beneficial to me. While I'm fortunate that I've always had a pretty good sense of my strengths, and the good sense to focus on them, this test gave me additional insight as to why some things are 'easy' for me. More importantly it gave me both additional ways to explain my potential contribution and to know how to verbalize what it is I can help people with. I'm giving serious thought to encouraging all clients to take the 30 minutes or so this test requires. I believe it would be an invaluable addition to all collaboration! |
